Deconomix LP Storage

After many a month online, the most popular search term that brings people to this site is “LP storage”, so much so that livingwithmusic.com has taken over the top spot with many search engines. Since November of 2005, I’ve covered quite a few (but not nearly enough) of the most popular storage solutions for the vinyl enthusiast, but my bookmarks are still filled with perhaps a bit more reclusive shelving units that may be less wide-spread but have garnered as positive or even enthusiastic reviews as have the widely-known solutions discussed on this site already.

One manufacturer with a rock-steady reputation I keep coming across, especially on European music forums and discussion boards, is UK-based manufacturer Deconomix.

As far as I could ascertain, Deconomix, founded by Stuart Fisher, has been supplying the more than huge UK-DJ market with vinyl storage solutions for more than 7 years, but it was the steady flow of highly enthusiastic recommendations that turned my attention to their expandable storage solutions that reach industrial vinyl archiving proportions. Additionally, and that’s where things get interesting for people with a thicker wallet, they can also custom-make just about anything you want, from curved consoles to floor to ceiling archiving storage. If you have enough LPs or other vinyl items to open a shop with … hell, they can outfit one of those as well.

We all know how damn heavy several hundreds or thousands of LPs can get and the immense strain larger collections can put on any shelving unit, so here are just a few of the products that have been given the collectors’ stamp of approval on many forums after having been given a severe acid test by collectors filling these units up to the brim with several thousand LPs.

Note: Stuart is currently redoing the Deconomix website, so you might or might not be able to view and/or purchase any of the below items at the moment. Contact Stuart for details (address below).

01. Deconomix Deco Tower

This one is basically the most heavy-duty unit they offer. Termed an “add-on solution from our standard range”, I’ve seen photos of home setups that smack several of these on the wall. One of these babies holds approximately 1440 12″ records and stands at 204cm (80.25″) height with a standard depth of 41cm (16″) and a width of 63cm (25″). Mind you, most people need a ladder to get anything out of the top shelf or, for starters, to actually see what’s in there, but if you are pressed for space, this is one rock-solid solution that gives you optimal space usage for your money. Yes, it’s not that cheap – it’ll set you back by £235 – but you also get a lot of bang for the buck, err Pound. Best of all, their slogan “not a bowed shelf in sight” seems to be accurate and I’ve only heard good things about this solution. This is also the only one I’ve seen in real life (a collector two towns down the map from my hometown has six of these impressive towers along his living room wall, keeping a little over 8500 LPs in there) and if the sturdy quality of this unit is anything to go by, Deconomix knows what collectors and DJs need!
Like all the other models Deconomix sells, this one is made from 18mm MDF which can either be delivered in plain state (light beige) or just about any custom color (if you have a Dulux paint swatch sample, they can match it). A custom job is certainly more expensive and would – in this case – add £85 to the bill, but considering that you can match your LP tower to just about any furniture item in the neighborhood is certainly worth that price tag.

The only thing that might be considered a negative is that – just like the other solutions they offer – the tower does not have backs. It does have integrated braces which support the shelves, hold the units square and, of course, hold the records in place. Besides that, we have a simple (idiot-safe) slot together assembly (allen key screw fittings) that will help you get this one up on the wall in no time.

Still, as usual, it’s a good idea to keep the compartments full. If you don’t, I’m sure you can come up with an ingenious way of keeping everything standing upright.

02. Deco Midi Tower (DMT) and MX-Tower (MXTP)

These two towers can hold approximately 2880 and 3840 LPs respectively. The DMT, which will cost you £470 (plain) or £640 (custom color) measures 205.9cm (81″) height, 41cm (16″) depth and 155cm (61″) width. The larger MXTP, which will cost you £530 (plain) or £740 (custom color) measures 205.9cm (81″) height, 41cm (16″) depth and 205cm ( 80.5″) width.

Both of these are industrial (strength) vinyl archiving solutions and basically work like the Deco Tower (simple slot together system) described in more detail above. Most importantly, both are rock-solid and can also be used free-standing. Deconomix does note though that two people are needed for assembly!

03. DJ-Oriented and Mobile Solutions

Deconomix also offers a wider range of “smaller” units which on paper seem to be more tailored towards DJ-use, but in reality can be used by anyone with a stero setup that also needs placement on top of the console.

The Deco Didi Max (DDMX) houses up to 1480 records, has space for a long row of CDs (or other gadgets) and provides a sturdy base for a stereo setup that can stand on a 41cm (16″) deep unit. Altogether, it stands 86cm (34″) tall and 205cm (80.5″) wide.

Just like the two mobile units, the Deco Compact 3 (DC3), a single-level LP storage solution (43cm (17″) tall, 41cm (16″) deep and 155cm (61″) wide) and the Deco Didi Go (DDG), a double-level solution (93.5cm (36.75″) tall, 41cm (16″) deep and 155cm (61″) wide) with space for some CDs as well as a stero setup on top), these units might well be big enough for the average vinyl collector who has held on to anywhere between 320 and 1400 something LPs. Prices range from £255 to £370.

Shipping

Deconomix delivers anywhere on this planet, but if you live outside the UK, you should phone or email them for a quote. Inside of the UK, prices include shipping and, if you can’t wait more than 24 hours to get your hands on these babies, you can add £20 and have them delivered the next day. Of course, every possible variation can be ordered online by contacting them via email.
